Living in Montebello provides a unique take on the classic ideas of how to celebrate the holiday season. While there won’t be any “caroling out in the snow,” you can bet that holiday cheer, lights, decorations, and tinsel will still abound. Combine the temperate weather with a mix of holiday traditions from cultures around the world, and you can truly make this season bright!
There are a number of great ways to celebrate the holidays outdoors in the area. Here are a few of the festivities that help make celebrating the holidays in Montebello a dream.
While watching a holiday movie and making cookies at home is a great way to celebrate the season, these activities are some examples of fun ways to meet with family and friends outside the house.
The Hollywood Christmas Parade – November 26 – What better way to kick in the holiday season than by attending this historic event! The annual parade features live performances, floats, a giant Kermit, and Santa Claus himself. If you want to skip the drive and watch from home, it is broadcast on several TV channels as well.
Dickens Christmas Carol Singalong – December 17 – The singalong will be led by The Dickens Holiday Carolers, the San Gabriel Valley’s renowned Edwardian-attired singing group. It is a free RSVP online or a $20 donation at the door.
Jingle All the Way: A Merry Christmas Run! – December 23 – The Christmas run is a delightful Holiday run that reminds us of the true essence of Christmas—spreading love, giving selflessly, and cherishing the joy of togetherness with family, friends, and even strangers, all while getting a run in before the Christmas festivities! Running might not be the first thing you think of when celebrating the holidays, but is there any better way to burn off those extra Christmas cookies?
With shows and performances ranging from heralded classics to new takes on old favorites, there is something for everyone this season.
A Christmas Carol – “Biola Theatre presents the time honored, beloved classic ’A Christmas Carol’ in a new adaptation that brings Dickens words front and center. A spirited theatrical event of opportunities missed, love lost and hope renewed, A Christmas Carol is a ghost story that reveals the Scrooge in all of us that yearns for the joy and promise of Christmas.”
California Christmas Holiday Musical Concert – This fun-filled concert is certain to become a tradition for your family! It’s a “California Christmas!” Tower of Power’s Greag Adams and East Bay Soul will join the performing roster, along with former Ambrosia lead singer Ken Stacey, singer/actress Rebecca Holden, and more!
How The Grinch Stole Christmas The Musical – “Featuring the hit songs ’You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch’ and ’Welcome Christmas,’ The Grinch discovers there’s more to Christmas than he bargained for in this heart-warming holiday classic. Max the Dog narrates as the mean and scheming Grinch, whose heart is ’two sizes too small,’ decides to steal Christmas away from the Whos, an endlessly cheerful bunch bursting with holiday spirit. Celebrate the holidays with the show The New York Times calls ’100 times better than any bedtime story!’”
While you surely love shopping online, there is just something special about heading to a shopping center to check out the deals and discounts on local products.
Candy Caneland and Craft Faire – December 9 – Come for the food and craft booths, but stay for the games, snow slides, and meet-and-greet with Santa. The popular Holidays Around the World cultural booths are a hit with all ages, so make sure to mark your calendar for this one.
13th Annual Holiday Market – December 2–3 – Get your holiday shopping done while supporting local designers, artists, small businesses, and emerging brands. A general admission ticket includes free holiday portraits and DIY gift wrapping, and purchasing a VIP ticket comes with free drinks.
The Shops at Montebello – Open Daily – All season long, enjoy a one-stop-shop experience by taking advantage of the food court, shops, and performances in the common areas by local talent. Check the blog on their site for information on how The Shops supports local women and how you can get involved this holiday season.
The true reason for the season is giving to those in need, and these are just a few suggestions of groups that can help you feel the true meaning of the holidays.
APA Community Holiday Toy Drive – December 2 – The APA Community Holiday Toy Drive Committee is composed of volunteers from nonprofits and professional organizations with a mission to give young children of low-income families the gift of joy and hope during the holiday season.
Volunteer with The Salvation Army – Daily – The Salvation Army Santas are a staple of the holiday season, but if ringing a bell isn’t your style, they have other positions available to help families in need. As one of the most recognizable groups that help those in need during the holiday season, the Salvation Army associates know what they are doing and can help you help others!
Candles are a great way to participate in holiday traditions, provide comforting scents and light to a space, and much more. Yet household candles are also the cause of up to 7,400 fires each year! Please take care this holiday season to keep a close eye on your candles and fires, especially in your bedroom. Consider using battery-powered alternatives or scented spray, but if you do use candles, never leave them unattended.
Christmas trees can also be a potential fire hazard, especially if dried out. Make sure your tree is well watered, and keep any open flames or candles away from the branches. When away from home, ensure that all the lights on the tree are turned off as well. This will protect not only your tree but also your apartment this holiday season!
